There is possibly no pointer in the Noble Eightfold Path more relevant to our times than that of Right Speech. The language we use, the words we choose, are no longer merely symbolic but are widely considered synonymous with action. Harmful words are increasingly seen as causing psychological harm on par with physical harm. And so, violence, aggression, neglect and oppression can be perpetrated without lifting a finger, simply through the language we use.
Whether or not one agrees with the degree to which this power to cause benefit or harm has been attributed to human speech, the fact remains that speech is now widely accepted as a key component of human morality. Even if you were to live an outwardly moral life through your actions and intentions, failure to use what constitutes ‘correct speech’ has the power to negate any good or benefit you may bring to others solely by your actions.
Yet, is there a difference between correct speech and right speech?
