There are two ways in which we can view the world.
The first is the innocent way, the way in which most young children view the world although they cannot articulate it as such. As a beautiful place full of joy and possibility. Where we can feel safe and secure, and all our heart’s desires can be met. Where pain and hurt are short-lived. Where speaking the truth is the obvious option. Where all of life is abundant and we need only ask, and we shall receive.
The second is the cynical way, the way in which most adults view the world even if only subconsciously. As a harsh and hostile place full of peril and hidden agendas. Where risks must constantly be anticipated and mitigated if we are to feel secure. Where our desires can only be met if we exert the force of our will over a largely uncooperative environment. Where joy and good fortune are short-lived. Where pain and heartbreak are constants that we must learn to cope with. Where speaking the truth is foolish and we learn to employ sophisticated layers of deception into our language so we can protect others and even ourselves from harsh truths. Where reality is perpetually lacking, and things fall apart if we detract our attention from their constant upkeep for even a second.
Which of these more accurately represents reality?
Both and neither.
